Abstract
On exposure to acrylamide, in the course of immobilization in polyacrylamide gel and treatment with 10%–20% monomer or introduction of 1%–3% acrylamide into the growth medium, Escherichia coli cells undergo the following changes: blockage of cell division, elongation of cells, inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis (mostly DNA), decrease in osmotic stability and ultrastructural alterations of the outer membrane. Mg2+ ions have a protective effect on bacteria treated with monomeric acrylamide but are ineffective in the course of cell immobilizationin polyacrylamide. Clones of E. coli and Pseudo monas putida with an increased resistance to monomeric acrylamide and immobilization in polyacrylamide have been selected.
