Abstract

To study the features of the cyto- and chemoarchitectonics of the subicular complex in the human fetal brain. A total of 10 human hemispheres from fetuses at 20–26 weeks of gestation were studied. Specimens were obtained from the archive of the Department of Pathological Anatomy and Forensic Medicine, St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University. Histological paraffin sections were stained by the Nissl method and immunohistochemically with antibodies against layer-specific proteins SATB2, FOXP1, CTIP2, and TBR1. The deep layers (py, po, V, VI) of the subicular complex, including the subiculum, the presubiculum, and the parasubiculum, contained FOXP1/CTIP2 and TBR1-immunopositive neurons, while the superfi cial layers (II, III) contained SATB2-positive cells. The subiculum demonstrates the features of two cortical formations: the allocortex (the FOXP1+/CTIP2+ cell layer, no lamina dissecans) and the periallocortex (the TBR1+ neuron layer). The presubiculum and parasubiculum belong to the periallocortex, as indicated by the isolated structure of SATB2+ layers II, III and the presence of a lamina dissecans.
