Abstract

The embryo-sac development inStriga euphrasioides Benth. is of the monosporic type. The integumentary tapetum is present and functions till late postfertilisation stages. The endosperm is cellular. Micropylar and chalazal haustoria are formed of which the former is two-celled and less aggressive and the latter single-celled. The correlation between ‘tenuinucellus’, integumentary tapetum and cellular endosperm is discussed in the light of the nutrition of the embryosac and embryo. The protective role of the integumentary tapetum is emphasised. The various devices for the nutrition of the embryo-sac are briefly indicated with special reference to the endosperm tissue.
