Abstract

This book represents the proceedings of the fifth international workshop on morphogenesis and malformation conducted at the Gulf State Park Resort, Gulf Shores, Ala, in 1978, sponsored by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. The purpose of this volume is to synthesize our knowledge concerning ear morphogenesis and dysmorphology by bringing together internationally respected basic scientists and clinicians to discuss a number of experimental and clinically related aspects of dysmorphogenesis. The themes discussed encompass a wide range of topics, from basic research in otic embryogenesis, otoconia morphogenesis, biochemistry, and genetics to clinical problems of auditory deprivation and dysmorphogenesis of the inner, middle, and external ear. One interesting article by T. R. Van DeWater et al reviews otogenic aspects of mammalian inner-ear development using in vivo mammalian otocyst culture. With this unique model system, they demonstrate the effects that the CNS has on the developing otocyst. In addition, this model
