Abstract
More than just translation: challenges and opportunities in intercultural and multilingual research
Highlights
Drawing on our respective experiences as intercultural researchers operating in specific bilingual settings, we address some issues that we consider to be relevant for further debate
We further suggest that a key consideration for researchers negotiating 25 different intercultural research settings and multilingual contexts should be communication
Language is a crucial aspect of almost all social science research, but one that may only be considered in depth when it is found to be problematic, as suggested by recent 5 debates on the “Anglo-American hegemony” in human geography, and the perceived reluctance of the Anglophone research world to address this issue
Summary
25 Aspects of intercultural and multilingual research are receiving increasing attention from the academic community in human geography and the wider social sciences. A further related current of academic thought focuses on the transferral of meaning within the specific act of translation in intercultural and multilingual contexts.
