Meredeth Turshen and Annie Thebaud, the authors of "International Medical Aid" (Monthly Review, December 1981), correctly point out that most disease problems are rooted in the social environment in which we live and, consequently, the limitations of essentially technical-medical solutions. They also point out the links between capitalist ideology and development and the bias in favor of these technical-medical means. In addition, they hold the World Health Organization (WHO) ideologically responsible for accepting and spreading these solutions to the exclusion of others. I believe them, however, to be in error, or at least overly simplistic, in equating the work of WHO almost exclusively with this narrow view of health and disease. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
