Abstract

Oral cancer (OC) is the fifth most prevalent cancer in males and its morbidity-mortality can be measured by data of hospitalization related to oral squamous cell carcinoma, malignant salivary glands tumors, sarcomas, lymphomas, leukemia, and melanomas. The objective of this study was to identify the morbidity-mortality profile of OC in Brazil in the last 10 years. This is a retrospective, descriptive study with OC data cases registered and extracted from DATASUS, using the descriptors lips and oral cavity cancer, from 2008-2018. A total of 289 293 cases of hospitalization were reported. Of the total, 71% were male, in which 42% were white-skinned. The southeast region registered 45% of the cases. The most prevalent age group was 50 to 59 years of age (29%), with 78% being males. Eleven percent of hospitalized patients died. Data collected emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary team working toward the prevention and treatment of OC in order to decrease its morbidity and mortality.
