Abstract

Introduction: Heart failure (HF) is common and remainsa serious pathology despite many advances intherapy. The aim of our work was to describe theepidemiological and clinical characteristics of HF andto determine the factors associated with mortality.Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study conducted at theservice of DIABCARMET of the Saint Jean de DieuHospital of Thies from September 1st, 2017 toDecember 31th, 2019.Results: The prevalence of HFwas 4.2%. The average age of patients was 62.3 ±16.6 years. The cardiovascular risk factors frequentlyassociated with HF was physical inactivity (66.3%)followed by hypertension and dyslipidemia inrespectively 39.1% and 37% of cases. Heart failurewas at stage III and IV of NYHA in 40.2% and 16.3%of patients respectively. HF with reduced ejectionfraction (HFrEF) was the most frequent, observed in81.5% of cases. Hospital mortality was 21.7%. Themain prognostic factors found were stage III/IV ofNYHA (p=0.002), hypertension and diabetes (p=0.006),arterial hypotension (p=0.003), and impaired leftventricular ejection fraction (p=0.04).Conclusion: Heart failure was frequent and severe.Early diagnosis and management could reducemortality. Prevention by controlling cardiovascular riskfactors should be the rule. Keywords: heart failure, hospital mortality, hypertension, diabetes, ThièsCorrespondance : Désiré Alain AffanglaHôpital Saint Jean de Dieu,BP 43 Thiès SénégalTél. : +221-77-634-04-00Email : docalaf@gmail.com44
