Abstract

It is commonplace that computers are intruding, in an active way, ever more into our lives. This incursion ought to lead to us thinking about the role of responsibility that attaches to the actions that result. After all, we think about responsibility when people act. The leading researchers in the field responsible for producing software that intrude so (that is, intrude actively) call the fruits of their labour Autonomous Software Agents (ASAs). So, is it desirable or even possible for these ASAs to be morally responsible?
