Abstract What, then, was Moore trying to do in “Proof of an External World?” As he says explicitly, he is taking up a challenge laid down by Kant, who wrote: “It still remains a scandal to philosophy ... that the existence of things outside of us ... must be accepted merely on faith, and that, if anyone thinks good to doubt their existence, we are unable to counter his doubts by any satisfactory proof’ (Critique of Pure Reason, N.K. Smith, trans., Bxxxix, note, p. 34).
