Abstract

MOOCs are Massive Open Online Courses that enroll thousands of students. MOOCs are constructed so that one professor provides course materials to as many students who want to participate, the students listen to the lectures, read the text materials and complete computer graded online assessments and then the students receive a certificate of completion for the course. Whether the course provides any kind of academic credit is an open question, but some colleges are investigating how to use MOOCs for college credit. With the possibility of serving thousands of students in one course, MOOCs appear to be a cost effective way to allow students to fulfill at least some of their general education requirements. But, do MOOCs provide the opportunities to develop critical thinking skills and foster civic engagement that most instructors of introductory American government classes strive to include in their classes? This paper will explore the development of MOOCs and how and if they should be incorporated at the community college level.
