Abstract

Vertical lift and control forces are obtained in a jet‐propelled aircraft by diverting the propulsion jet through upwardly and downwardly directed branches 10,12 at the rear end of the jet pipe 11. Control of the jet is effected by valves 15, 1 in the pipes 10, 11, respectively, and a pair of valves 5, 19 in the pipe 12, links 3, 17 connecting valves 1, 5 and 15, 19 respectively. For normal flight valves 5, 15 are closed and valve I opened, as shown, and for take‐off cables 7,8 are operated to close valve 1 and open valve 5. Constant height is maintained by an automatic control system operating cables 21, 22 to vary the relative settings of valves 15, 19.
