Abstract

Results of a simulation of the electromagnetic shower formation in single crystals of Ge and Si for particle energies up to 300 GeV are presented. The calculations are based on the shower Monte Carlo EGS4 code for amorphous materials, modified to account for coherence effects which arise in a crystal. In addiion, the increase in the energy loss of the channeled electrons due to radiation cooling is included. Good agreement with the available experimental data is found. Calculations on the angular and energy resolution of a crystal calorimeter for high energy electrons and gamma rays are also presented.
