Abstract

In the latest chapter of a 10-year reshuffling of assets, Monsanto any day now may announce a buyer for its styrenics plastics business. German chemical companies BASF and Bayer and Japan-based Toray Industries are among the most interested bidders for the world's third largest producer of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and acrylonitrile- butadiene-styrene (ABS), plastics widely used in automobiles, appliances, toys, and drain pipes. Industry sources suggest that General Electric, Huntsman Chemical, or Taiwanese investors also may be interested. Earlier this year, the company put the styrenics business up for sale. Because it intends to complete the sale by the end of the year, Monsanto must agree on a deal soon to hurdle any regulatory roadblocks before then.
