Abstract

Monocytes are circulating precursors of macrophages and dendritic cells. They play critical roles in the inflammatory response and are associated with manifold inflammatory disorders. The discovery of human and murine monocyte subpopulations has revealed new insights into the migration, differentiation and functional role of these cells in the pathogenesis of inflammation. These findings are expected to identify novel targets for future therapeutic strategies.
