Abstract

The mutant C‐2A’of the unicellular green alga Scenedesmus obliquus accumulates the chlorophyll‐precursors protocbloropbyllide and the already eslerified protochlorophyll when grown heterotrophically in the dark. Two derivatives of protochlorophyll. monovinyl protochlorophyll (MV‐PChl) and divinyl protochlorophyll (DV‐PChl), were isolated from dark‐grown cells of mutani C‐2A’and characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Their molecular masses were determined by plasma desorption mass spectrometry. Both MV‐ and DV‐PChl were mainly esterified with geranylgeraniol. However, some esterification with the more saturated alcohols dihydrogeranylgeraniol. tetrahydrogeranylgeraniol and phytol could also be detected.
