Abstract
Objective: We report the treatment of two patients with bipolar disorder with lamotrigine, an anticonvulsant with mood-stabilizing and antidepressant properties. Case reports: One patient with bipolar II disorder with rapid cycling and one with treatment-refractory bipolar I disorder each responded well to lamotrigine 50 mg/day and remained cycle-free during 'two years' follow-ups. Conclusion: Lamotrigine appears to be useful as a mood stabilizer in patients with rapid-cycling and treatment-refractory bipolar disorder who have responded poorly to first-line agents.
