Abstract

With 1 table Abstract Genetic resistance is the most effective, economical and environment friendly method of managing tan spot of wheat caused by the ascomycete Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Died) Drechs. (anamorph Dreschslera tritici-repentis, Died). This study was carried out to determine the inheritance and chromosomal location of tan spot resistance gene in the winter wheat cultivar ‘Arina’. Chi-square analysis of the F2 segregation data of hybrids between 21 monosomic lines of wheat cultivar ‘Chinese Spring’ and resistant cultivar ‘Arina’ revealed that tan spot resistance in ‘Arina’ is controlled by a single recessive gene located on chromosome 3A. This gene is designated tentatively as TsrAri. The winter wheat cultivar ‘Arina’ possesses resistance genes not only for tan spot but also for fusarium and septoria and hence can be widely used in wheat breeding programmes to improve the resistance level of adapted and high yielding cultivars which otherwise lack resistance genes.
