Abstract

The temperature dependence of the photoionization process of N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl- p-phenylenediamine (TMPD) in acetonitrile has been investigated by picosecond dye laser photolysis measurements. The ionization rate from the fluorescence state shows an Arrhenius-type relation with an activation energy of 7.4 kcal/mol. The reaction mechanism has been discussed on the basis of the fluctuation of solvent molecules facilitating the ionization.
