Abstract

A mononuclear iron mononitrosyl complex with two 8-mercaptoquinolate ligands was obtained by two different methods. It donates NO when dissolved in DMSO and then diluted with water. The complex was studied by X-ray diffraction, IR, Mössbauer, and EPR spectroscopy. The strong covalent bonding is observed in the Fe(II)-NO• fragment which, together with strong antiferromagnetic coupling, gives the resulting S = 1/2 for the {FeNO}7-unit.The study of the magnetic properties has shown that there is a tendency for the molecules of the complex to dimerize in the crystal structure due to intermolecular ferromagnetic exchange coupling between them through π-stacking at low temperatures.
