Abstract

1. 1. Polysaccharides were extracted from the mesoglea of Chrysaora quinquecirrha medusa and recovered by ethanol-NaCl precipitation. 2. 2. After hydrolysis in 6 N HCl, the monomeric constituents of the mesogleal polysaccharides were identified using TLC and quantified using four colorimetric reactions. 3. 3. The presence of hexoses, pentoses, uronic acids and hexosamines indicates that complex carbohydrates are undoubtedly associated with the gelatinous matrix. 4. 4. Of particular interest is the high content of xylose and the almost equal molar amount of fucose in the hydrolysate.
