Abstract

Recent work on monolithic optical active filters and receivers based on DFB (distributed feedback) or DBR (distributed Bragg reflector) laser diode structures is reviewed. Nonlinear dynamical effects under high-Q conditions and high input power are discussed. Through the coupled field and carrier dynamics, the state and dynamical characteristics are studied. Device performance at different cavity length, electrical bias, incoming signal level, frequency detuning, and signal bandwidth is calculated for both ASK (amplitude-shift keying) and FSK (frequency-shift keying) input. The advantages of this device and critical parameters for communication applications are discussed. >
