Abstract

Simple and practical techniques for optical demultiplexing and wavelength conversion will be needed in OTDM and WDM systems.1,2 Here we present a compact multifunctional device capable of carrying out both high-speed demultiplexing and wavelength conversion. The device is realized by monolithic integration of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) in the two branches of a Michelson interferometer (MI). To demonstrate the feasibility of the SOA-MI, we report demultiplexing of 20-Gbit/s OTDM signals and wavelength conversion of 10-Gbit/s signals. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the SOA-MI can be used to improve the extinction ratio and to perform spectral cleaning (e.g., reduce chirp) of 10-Gbit/s signals.
