Abstract

AbstractAscidians are known to accumulate vanadium in their blood cells and have six to nine different types of blood cells. Among these cells, the signet ring cell has been newly identified as the vanadocyte (vanadium‐containing blood cell). We have raised monoclonal antibodies specific to the signet ring cells of Ascidia sydneiensis samea for use in the identification of vanadocytes. A hybridoma cell line which secretes a monoclonal antibody specific to the signet ring cell has been established. Immunoblotting analysis showed that the antigen recognized by the antibody is a single polyptide of about 45 kDa. It appears that the monoclonal antibodies specific to the signet ring cells may be useful markers for studies for the process of differentiation of ascidian blood cells.
