Abstract

This paper presents an IoT automation system using smartphones to provide laundry machine status updates to all the users. A mobile phone is mounted to the back panel of a washing machine/dryer to remotely record changes in the magnetic field. A custom program was developed to obtain and process data from the in-built sensors of a mobile phone using computational algorithms to accurately determine the ON/OFF state of a machine. The state of an individual laundry machine was then sent to the cloud and made available to all users on both Android & iOS mobile applications. This system was tested and determined to be robust and reliable for real-world settings.
