Abstract

Water is one of the most important natural resources for living things. The quality of water in the certain area is influenced by waste water that dissolves in the system. Therefore, waste water must meet the standard of quality set by regulation. Up to now, to measure the quality standard of waste water, a set of laboratory tests are required. It takes time and costs a lot. A smart environment system is needed to monitor the waste water automatically, real time, in a faster and cheaper way. In this study, we developed waste water monitoring system using wireless sensor network utilizing waspmote main board as micro controller and smart water sensor equipped with pH sensor, conductivity sensor, dissolved oxygen sensor, and water temperature sensor. As for the communication with the server, we used 3G module. The real time data obtained from the sensors then stored in the database and then represented in graphical form on the web-based dashboard. During the system testing within 12 hours, we got the result of mean values for pH at upstream, mid, and downstream water waste flow respectively were 7.5, 7.7, and 7. The mean value of conductivity was 201.5 mmhos/cm, 122.6 mmhos/cm, and 866.5 mmhos/cm. The mean values of dissolved oxygen were 56.5%, 64.9%, and 36.1%, respectively. While the average value of each water temperature is 30.7oC, 30.6oC, and 30.8oC. The system was equipped with notification feature to alert the user when the measurements were above or below specified thresholds. This way, the quality standard of waste water can be well monitored and maintained.
