Abstract

The study presents the results of measurement of platelet serotonin level and estimation of emotional status and degree of asthenia in 45 patients in acute period of Ixodid tick borreliosis (27 patients with local and 18 with disseminated forms). Twenty (20) healthy subjects consisted control group. Serotonin level was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Significant decrease of serotonin level at the height of disease was seen in patient group compared to the control group. During the early recovery stage the platelet serotonin level in the group of patients with borreliosis only had the trend to increase, but still remained lower than in control group. We revealed negative correlation between platelet serotonin level and reactive anxiety assessed with Spielberger-Hanin questionnaire. The assessment of platelet serotonin level in patients with Ixodid tick borreliosis can suggest the severity of potential nervous tissue damage and involvement of serotonin in genesis of anxiety and depressive symptoms. This question should be investigated further.
