Abstract

Results of an extensive experiment at five sites in Victoria, Australia, during the 1985–1986 summer are presented, and a modified vegetation index observed by the AVHRR is related to “grassland” fuel-moisture content. This relation is used as a basis for an operational system by which the Country Fire Authority uses AVHRR imagery as an objective input to decisions on the declaration of total fire ban regions in Victoria.
