Abstract

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment of prevalent end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients in South Korea declined from a peak of 23% in 2005 to 8% in 2017. Only 13% (119/941) of dialysis facilities offer PD, and PD use ranges from 6% to 13% of their dialysis patients. Low PD utilization in Korea likely is multifactorial and relates to less favorable reimbursement for PD than for facility-based HD, inadequate nephrologist training and/or experience in managing PD patients and an aging ESKD population (45% are aged 65 years or older) who are less likely to be treated with PD in Korea; because previous domestic and international studies have indicated poor outcomes in elderly diabetic patients.
