Abstract

Molybdates inhibit the aqueous corrosion of steel. We show that molybdate can promote film formation, extend the anodic passive range, and lower the residual passive current. By in situ analysis for molybdenum on electrode surfaces we find that MoO 2− 4 is adsorbed weakly but copiously in some films. The mechanism of corrosion inhibition by molybdates is discussed.
