Abstract
1. 1. Double eyestalk ablation (DA) significantly decreased the length of the intermolt period but single ablation (SA) did not. 2. 2. Ablation did not significantly change the growth in wet weight or carapace length. 3. 3. Feeding rate was increased 20% in SA but reduced 36% in DA. The decreased feeding rate of DA crabs may be attributed to reduced energy demands since they were less active. 4. 4. Ablation did not alter the percentage of body water of crabs following ecdysis. 5. 5. Mortality rate of SA increased two-fold relative to non-ablated crabs; DA increased four-fold. Mortality rate increased near ecdysis for all groups.
