Abstract

Development of moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method for predicting the eutectic reaction during severe accident, especially at the lower head, in nuclear power plants is important. In this study, solid–liquid system of eutectic interaction was developed. Mass diffusion theory was used for mass transfer between particles. Binary phase diagram was used for developing criteria of transforming into liquid/eutectic particle. THERMOCALC with NUCL10 dataset was utilized to obtain binary phase diagram. Based on the developed MPS model, the TREAT experiments were analyzed. For penetration rates of molten uranium into steel test section, the two-dimensional MPS simulations predicted agreeable values with the experiments for temperature above 1233 and 1187°C for Armco iron and SS304, respectively. As for SS430, MPS simulation predicted agreeable result at 1244°C.
