Abstract

Pig mucosal and beef lung heparins were fractionated on Ultrogel AcA 44 into seven fractions with molecular weights in the range 4,850–31,800. Two factor Xa methods, one of these additionally in modified form, were used to investigate molecular weight dependence of activity. One method indicated decreasing activity with increasing molecular weight; the other showed highest activity at an intermediate molecular weight, the value of which altered when the method was modified. The molecular weight dependence of the less active lung heparin was less simple than that of the mucosal heparin. It is concluded that the two factor Xa methods are not interchangeable in the study of anti-factor Xa activity of heparins of differing molecular weights.
