Abstract

Studies of gas phase metal cluster chemistry start with a fully coordinatively unsaturated, “naked” cluster free of support interactions or ligands. This offers a unique opportunity to explore a number of key scientific issues in chemistry and physics as the number of constituent atoms is increased, and bulk properties as well as stable surface structures evolve. These include questions such as: What are the structures of the various clusters — Are they unique? How do the electronic, optical and chemical properties of the clusters change as a function of the number and type of constituent atoms? How large does the cluster have to be before solid state theoretical description applies? What are the magnetic properties of “naked” and “dressed” clusters? Is there catalytic chemistry possible on such clusters, etc?
