Abstract
Chilling-sensitive and chilling-resistant plants were compared with respect to the compositions of fatty acids and molecular sepcies of a leaf-phospholipid, phosphatidylglycerol. The sum of palmitic plus trans-Δ3-hexadecenoic acid contents ranged from 50 to 57% of the total fatty acids of this lipid in chilling-resistant plants, and from 60 to 78% in chilling-sensitive plants. The sum of the contents of dipalmitoyl plus l-palmitoyl-2-(trans-Δ3 hexadecenoyl) species ranged from 3 to 19% of the total species of phosphatidylglycerol in chilling-resistant plants, and from 26 to 65% in chillingsensitive plants. These findings suggest that these two molecular species of phosphatidylglycerol are closely associated with the chilling sensitivity of the plants.
