Abstract

A study of the blood-aqueous barrier was performed by using the information provided by the parallel quantitative determination of seven plasma proteins (orosomucoid, albumin, transferrin, IgG, IgA, IgM and α 2-macroglobulin) in the serum and aqueous humour of 109 patients. The patients were divided into four groups, according to their total aqueous protein level. The aqueous humour concentration of the different plasma proteins varied with their molecular size and concentration in the serum, and this relationship was used to evaluate the pore size of the blood-aqueous barrier in the four patient-groups. The pore size of the blood-aqueous barrier was found to present a linear correlation with the total aqueous protein level up to 1000 mg protein per 100 ml aqueous. Above this level, the blood-aqueous barrier was completely open and no pore size was measurable.
