Abstract

The Dipterocarpaceae is distributed mainly in Southeast Asia and its species represent a major canopy component in tropical forests. In Southeast Asia’s tropical rain forests in paticular, the Dipterocarpaceae is one of the region’s most ecologically and economically significant tree families. The family displays extreme species richness in many tropical rain forests, including Pasoh Forest Reserve (Pasoh FR) — one of key tropical field ecological centres in the world. Dipterocarp species are abundant in the reserve and consequently represent major target species for the studies in this forest. In this paper, recent progress in molecular phylogenetics of Dipterocarpaceae is reviewed, with reference to representatives of all the genera found in the Pasoh FR. A familial relationship of Dipterocarpaceae, Sarcolaenaceae and Cistaceae was re-analyzed using maximum parsimony, neighbor joining, and maximum likelihood methods. A hypothetical phylogenetic tree of genera of Dipterocarpaceae combining all the published phylogenetic relationships is proposed.
