Abstract

The longest wave absorption band in the electronic spectra of 65 complex pyrylium salts has been calculated by the simple MO-LCAO method. With a proper choice of parameters for the various heteroatoms considered, a good correlation between calculated energy difference and observed frequencies is obtained. The assumption of co-planarity is examined, and the effect of substituents in different positions of the pyrylium nucleus is discussed.
