Abstract

K-shell ionisation cross sections of Si, P, S, K and Ca were measured using carbon ions at energies between 1 and 6.4 MeV. The experimental results are compared with theory. For high projectile velocities direct Coulomb ionisation of atomic orbitals is most important while for intermediate velocities Pauli excitation via level crossing contributes significantly. For the lowest velocities, direct Coulomb ionisation becomes again the most important ionisation process, but now of molecular orbitals.
