Abstract

Observations of molecular gas in galaxies at high redshifts can give us information about the conditions for star formation at early epochs of the evolution of the universe. With present day instrumentation, emission lines can only be observed with the aid of gravitational magnification. Relatively detailed information can be obtained through molecular absorption lines, but only a few such absorption systems have been found. Here we discuss high-z observations of molecular gas, what we have learned and how a large millimeter array can improve our knowledge.
