Abstract

Singly-charged molecular cations are present in stellar and planetary atmospheres, in comets, and in the interstellar medium. Laboratory studies of molecular ions are required to support astrophysical observation and interpretation. The range of such investigations is discussed and techniques are presented for the study of radiative and nonradiative transitions in molecular ions. Astrophysical applications are made of the results of several different types of laboratory studies. A discussion is also given concerning the possible formation and direct or indirect observation of doubly-charged molecular cations in astrophysical situations.
