Abstract

We have observed the v=1-0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen at 2.1212μm In a sample of dominant galaxies within clusters with X-ray cooling flows. The clusters selected all have large inferred mass deposition rates and strong optical emission line systems. Using near-IR spectroscopy all nine galaxies with luminous Hα emission were found to have strong molecular hydrogen emission in the 1-0 S(1) line. The Ha and 1-0 S(1) emission are strongly correlated with the 1-0 S(1) flux averaging about 6% of the Hα flux. The total molecular hydrogen luminosity is typically about 0.4% of the X-ray luminosity, assuming that the v=1-0 S(1) line contains about 2% of the total H2 luminosity.
