Abstract

Although the mammalian sex chromosomes differ extensively in morphology and genetic content (Goodfellow et al. 1985a), meiotic pairing and segregation have been taken to indicate that the sex chromosomes have sequences in common (Koller and Darlington 1934; Burgoyne 1982). This sequence homology was postulated to reside in the morphological pairing region, which in humans occurs between the tip of the X-chromosome short arm and the Y-chromosome short arm (Pearson and Bobrow 1970; Chen and Falek 1971; Chandley et al. 1984).
