Abstract

Abstract : We have demonstrated of a new class of optically pumped gas lasers inside a hollow-core photonic crystal fibers. Here, a molecular gas is confined to a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber whose transmission spans several octaves to reach the mid-infrared spectral region. The gas is pumped in the near-infrared (1.5 mum) and the laser produces mid-infrared light (3 mum) offering a potentially robust, efficient, and compact means of producing step-tunable eye-safe mid-infrared radiation well suited to a multitude of applications. During the course of the grant we have demonstrated for the first time mid-infrared lasing in both an acetylene and hydrogen cyanide filled kagome structured hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. These lasers are the first in a new class of infrared lasers based on the combination of hollow-fiber and optically pumped-gas technologies.
