Abstract

N.M.R. proton relaxation rates of normal and 17O-enriched water and deuteron relaxation rates of heavy water were measured in mixtures with dimethylsulphoxide at different compositions and temperatures. The 17O-induced proton relaxation rate was extracted and from this the rotational correlation time of water was determined. Using these correlation times the composition-dependence of the deuterium quadrupole coupling constant of water was derived and a strong variation over the measured composition range is evident.
