Abstract

ABSTRACTSome linearly conjugated liquid crystals with birefringence greater than 0.4 are discussed. UV stability of these high birefringence liquid crystals was systematically investigated. Both electronic conjugation and molecular structure make essential contributions to the observed degradation phenomena. Guidelines for designing stable high birefringence liquid crystals for displays and optical communications are discussed.
