Abstract

We analyzed the promoter regions of the adult rat β (IIβ, IIIβ, and 0β)-globin genes. The results indicated that (1) the activities of the minimal promoters of these three genes are proportional to the gene expression levels in vivo, and (2) erythroid-specific repressor regions are located immediately upstream of the minimal promoter sequences and are regulated by the same transcription factor.
