Abstract

The ability to predict a person’s blood group phenotype from their DNA sequence is not a new concept. Since the first cloning and sequencing of blood group genes in the early 1990s, twenty years later we have reached the point where the molecular bases of most red cell, platelet and neutrophil antigens are known and a myriad of genetic tests are possible to aid safer blood transfusion.
