Abstract

The rotational state distribution of RbBr reactively scattered from Rb + HBr has been measured with an electric quadrupole state selector. The focussing curves are found to fit maxwellian forms with T rot = 750 ± 100 K. By taking into account the velocity smearing of the beams the results are shown to be consistent with a model in which the orbital angular momentum of the reactants is converted entirely into rotational angular momentum of the RbBr reaction product. On the basis of this analysis it is possible to extract the absolute reactive cross section, 28 ± 4 Å 2 which is slightly smaller than a previous measurement for the reaction of K with HBr.
