Abstract

AbstractLangmuir‐Blodgett (LB) films of n‐alkyl acrylates with different chain lengths have been investigated with respect to the molecular arrangement and their polymerizability. X‐ and Y‐types of depositions were obtained depending on surface pressures and temperatures. In the case of acrylate monomers with even‐numbered carbon chains polarized IR spectra revealed that X‐type LB films prepared at lower pressures gave uniaxial orientation while Y‐type films at higher pressures biaxial, although X‐ray diffraction of LB films indicated non‐alternating head‐to‐tail structure irrespective of the deposition types. The uniaxial films with rotational freedom exhibited high polymerizability, whereas the biaxial films with closely packed arrangement showed low reactivity. With odd‐numbered nonadecyl acrylate both types of LB films exhibited similar molecular arrangement and polymerizability.
